EGL

Last reviewed · June 2026

EGL. The European Gemological Laboratory — a grading lab whose reports are generally considered more lenient than GIA. Professional buyers typically discount EGL grades by one to two steps in color and clarity when calculating a resale offer.

There is no single EGL — the name has been used by several independent labs in different countries with different grading standards. EGL USA was the largest, and shut down in 2014.

If you have an EGL report, do not assume your stone will be priced at the grades on paper. Buyers will re-grade and often quote you using stricter GIA-equivalent grades.
